Vaastu Shastra

Ancient Indian principles for balanced living — and how we apply timeless wisdom to modern homes, including our Seaside Serenade community on ECR.

Vaastu Shastra is an ancient science from India, shaped by our culture, climate, and geography. Rooted in the Vedas and texts such as the Stapatya Veda (from the Atharva Veda), it is traditionally said to be four to five thousand years old. Early rules focused on how sunlight moves across a building through the day. For long periods it remained a technical discipline for architects and their families, with changes made only after careful study.

Today, Vaastu is understood as the dwelling where people live and work — not only houses but offices, factories, hotels, and more. Scriptures describe two interacting forces on the land — positive and negative — that guide harmonious design.

All built form draws on five elements — Vayu (air), Agni (fire), Jal (water), Bhumi (earth), and Aakasha (space) — the Panchabhutas.

  • VayuAir
  • AgniFire
  • JalWater
  • BhumiEarth
  • AakashaSpace

Vaastu applies to homes, workplaces, industry, and hospitality — aligning spaces with nature for comfort, clarity, and prosperity.

GUIDE TO LOCATION OF DIFFERENT ROOMS

Entrance

According to Vaastu, the most beneficial entrances in the house are those in North East, East, or North direction.

Bedrooms

RoomIdeal direction
Master bedroomSouth West
Other bedroomsSouth and / or West
Guest roomNorth–West

Ideally, the master bedroom should be in the south-west corner. Avoid a bedroom in the south-east (associated with fire); it may cause discord. Bed placement: south-west of the room, head towards south. Beds in the north/east zones of the room may contribute to stress or instability.

Wooden beds are preferable to metal where possible. Prefer square or rectangular rooms. Young married couples should avoid sleeping in a north-east room. Do not sleep under a beam. Guest rooms are best in North-West or North-East.

Living room

North–West. The central zone (Brahmasthan) should be free of obstructions — no beam, pillar, toilet, staircase, wall fragment, or lift cutting through the space.

Kitchen

South–East or North–West. Kitchen in the North-East is not recommended. East kitchen may affect health; South-East is considered best. South kitchen may relate to unrest; South-West kitchen may pose long-term concerns. Cook facing East where possible.

Toilets / bathrooms

North–West or South–East. Avoid toilets in South-West and North-East for health and prosperity. Toilets in the North may obstruct prosperity. Avoid a toilet under a staircase.

Staircase

Preferred in South, South-West, or West. Orientation: North to South or East to West.

Puja / prayer room

North-East. Do not place a puja room under a staircase.

Terrace / open space

East, North, North-East, and Centre — favourable for light and ventilation.

Other guidelines

  • Door width ideally half the door height.
  • Main door should not sit exactly opposite another house’s main door.
  • Underground water tank should not be in South-West.
  • Plots: prefer rectangular or square; site may slope towards North & East or North-East.
